About 2007 CANstruction®....

Indianapolis architects, engineers and builders struted their design and construction genius to see whose team could build the most spectacular structure using little more than full cans of food. All this design talent was put to the test to make a difference in the cause to fight hunger. Starting at 10:00 a.m. on June 4th 2007, and continuing until 9:00 p.m., thirteen teams from the citys most prestigious design and construction firms risk their reputations as they assembled structures in Lafayette Square Mall, using only cans, tape, cardboard and a prayer in their attempt to defy the laws of gravity. Lafayette Square Mall is located at 3919 Lafayette Road.

On Tuesday, June 5, 2007 (National Hunger Awareness Day) a jury consisting of Sherry Siewert, Executive Director of the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority; Stacy Paetz, Indiana Pacers Host and Reporter; TV Personality Hal Fryar, also known as Harlow Hickenlooper; Indiana Pacers great Darnell Dr. Dunk Hillman; Scott Sander, WISH-TV news anchor; and Renee Smith, architect for Clarian Health, selected winners in a number of categories including Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, and Structural Ingenuity.

The exhibition is open to the public Monday, June 4th through Monday June 18th, during normal mall operating hours (Monday to Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m.).

In only the first year of the competition, organizers are on track to raise more than 42,500 cans for Gleaners Food Bank to feed the hungry in Central Indiana, a number which would likely make the event the second largest collection effort for Gleaners.

Of equal importance is the spotlight Canstruction focuses on the distressing fact that 26 million Americans go hungry each year in the richest nation on earth. Right here in Central Indiana, 205,330 Hoosiers need food assistance on a weekly basis. Nearly half are seniors and children thats over 78,800 Hoosier kids who may not develop properly for lack of nutritious food.

The visual impact of the giant structures, along with moving statements that address the depth and urgency of the problem, sparks public involvement. Indianapolis is one of 80 cities across North America sponsoring Canstruction competitions in the coming months. Together they will donate more than 2 million pounds of food to local food banks.

Firms competing in Indianapolis include: A2SO4, American Structurepoint, Architects Forum, Architura, Blackburn Architects, Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects, BSA Lifestructures, Carver Design Studio Architects, CSO Architects, F.A. Wilhelm, i.d.o Interior Design, Lauth Property Group, MSKTD, Overby Engineering, Pepper Construction Company, Ratio Architects, Schmidt Associates, Shiel Sexton, Smoot Construction, Synthesis, and Turner Construction Company.
