Although we have not seen specific language as yet,
it is our understanding that interior design lobbyists are
working to amend into Indiana law a definition of interior
design. AIA Indiana opposes this effort.
It is rare, if not unheard of, for a state to define the scope
of interior design, or any other occupation for that matter,
without regulating the profession. Adding a definition of a
profession into law when there is no regulation of those practicing
makes this effort suspicious. Also, adding just a definition
would not provide any enforcement opportunities or enhanced
legal standing against those who currently are offering interior
design services.
Please
contact your state senator and ask them to oppose any amendment
that would provide a definition of interior design (ref:
State Senate - 800/382-9467) no later than Monday, Feb. 25!
Also, feel free to contact your state
senator at their home over the weekend if you know them personally.

Supporters of interior design
registration are also attempting to override the governor’s veto of the 2007 interior
design registration legislation. The likelihood of the Indiana
General Assembly, particularly the Indiana Senate, overriding
the governor’s veto of the interior design registration
bill still remains unlikely. Nonetheless, supporters of the
measure are making the effort.
AIA Indiana will continue to
closely monitor this issue.
