Louisville Is The Host City
For The 2008 Convention

The AIA Kentucky/AIA Indiana Convention will be held October 9-11, 2008 in Louisville, Kentucky. The theme is "Evolution of Architecture: From Chisel to BIM," selected in part to reflect the 100th anniversary of the AIA in Kentucky.

Programs will be held at The Henry Clay, a newly- renovated conference facility on Third Street in downtown Louisville. Overnight accommodations will be available at the Louisville Marriott Downtown.

An Opening Night Reception will take place on Thursday evening, October 9, at 21c Museum Hotel Gallery.

21c Museum is North America's first museum dedicated solely to collecting and exhibiting contemporary art of the 21st century

Keynote presenters on Friday, October 10 include:
Phil Bernstein, FAIA of Autodesk,
Markku Allison, AIA of the AIA's Integrate Practice office, and Sarah Susanka, FAIA, architect and acclaimed author of the "Not So Big..." series of books.

Other presentations will focus on historic preservation tax credits, disaster assistance programs of the AIA, and how to become LEED certified.

A trade show will also be part of the program. (View Exhibitor List).

The centerpiece of the program on Saturday, October 11 will be a dialogue on the changing nature of practice, featuring several presenters and panelists including: Michael Speaks, dean of the University of Kentucky College of Design,Chris Sharples, AIA of SHoP Architects in New York City, and Bill Zahner, president of A Zahner Architectural Metal Company.

The gentlemen above will also participate in a panel discussion on the use of BIM in Kentucky and Indiana along with BIM user and sole practitioner David Banks, AIA of Frankfort, Kevin Klinger of Ball State University's Institute for Digital Fabrication, and Wil Marquez, director of an exploratory design initiative at A2S04 in Indianapolis. Louisville historian Dr. Tom Owen will speak at the closing luncheon, and we have arranged three local architectural tours and a special "didactic field drawing" session for the afternoon.

Both AIA Kentucky and AIA Indiana will also present their chapter design awards and recognize outstanding individual service with special awards during a banquet on Friday night, October 10.

Convention Footnote News.....

Popular 2007 AIA Indiana/Kentucky Convention keynote speaker and futurist Lowell Catlett Ph.D. was the featured keynote speaker at the July 9-11, 2008, AIA Knowledge Leadership Assembly.

Topics covered included the aging U.S. population, the significant change in this country's ethnicity, the greening of America, and the increasing cost of transportation.
