AIA Ohio Valley Regional News

March 2007 OVR Brief
From: Directors: Anthony Costello, FAIA & John W. Rogers, AIA, ACHA & Chris Bowling, Associate AIA Director

New AIA Mission Statement: “The AIA is the voice of the Architectural Profession and the resource for its members in service to society.”

Advocacy:

  • AIA continues to get good public exposure from a variety of printed materials.
  • The AIA is gaining strength on Capitol Hill and we are being approached by other organizations to support them or help support our positions.
  • PAC Funds are currently at $87k  with a target of $500k.

AIA 150:

  • Declarations will be made at national and state levels to raise visibility.
  • Share plans for events during Architecture Week, April 8-14, 2007.
  • Google Earth information system should be operational by Convention.

AIA Convention:

  • May 3-5, 2007 in San Antonio, “Going Beyond Green” theme, please plan to attend.
  • Hal Munger, FAIA is running for national treasurer, give him your support!

Operations:

  • Membership Entrance and exit interviews are being developed to identify value.
  • E-Knowledge (to be renamed later) will beta launch at Convention in May.
  • 1st step in AIA transformation to on line strategy.
  • Will use think map technology and become 365 day convention.
  • Members find and share knowledge – including member-generated info.
  • Features national, components, firms and outside sources.
  • Feedback from members on eminent domain call that was emailed out was good example of communication from membership at large to inform the Board.
  • Revenue sharing from electronic documents being evaluated as delivery system being considered.
  • Integrated Practice (BIM) = behavior X technology X business structure, behavior and technology are improving but the challenge is the business structure.

Top issues of the NAC:

  • ARE concurrency. Gearing up for NCARB’s June meeting and advocating to states for ARE concurrency. Known issues are reciprocity among states that already offer ARE concurrency, i.e. Kentucky.

  • NCARB’s plan to more strictly regulate IDP units to a 6 month submittal process. NCARB is planning a model law that requires IDP candidates to submit their hours every 6 months. The NAC is working with the AIA National Board to craft a position on this potential rule change.

  • Loan Deferment
The NAC is currently working with Paul Medhelson and AIA’s Political Action Committee on the possibility for Architectural Intern’s to defer their student loans while in their Internship.

  • AssociateNews and Forward, NAC’s national publications, are focusing in on the common architect with their “Joe Architect” series. AssociateNews is structured in a Q&A format that asks basic questions from how intern friendly the firm is to what the firm is doing about global warming and the 2030 carbon neutrality goal. Forward is focusing on more in-depth editorial articles about the firm’s position on the future of the profession, technology, internship, etc.

  • The NAC will be adding to the website www.archcareers.org a tips and link page for emerging professionals regarding career development. These tips and links will connect an emerging professional with professional websites that speak about, but not limited to, retirement, maternity/paternity leave, benefits, questions to ask during an interview, what to look for in a firm, etc.
