AIA Ohio Valley Regional News

June 2007

From: Directors: Anthony Costello, FAIA & John W. Rogers, AIA, ACHA & Chris Bowling, Associate AIA Director

New AIA Mission Statement: "The AIA is the voice of the Architectural Profession and the resource for its members in service to society."

Welcome

Jack Baumann, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, has been elected our new regional associate director for the OVR Region. He was elected unanimously by the Regional Council. He will assume his duties in 2008. We are grateful for the great involvement and leadership provided by Chris Bowling, Assoc. AIA our outgoing associate director. THANKS CHRIS !!!

Advocacy

  • Architectural Record is accepting your projects to be placed on their web site.
  • Architect of the Capital in DC – still promoting AIA Architect for the position.
  • Sustainability and carbon impact issues are appearing at all levels of government .
  • Affordable Housing and Historic Preservation continue to receive support from the AIA on Capitol Hill.
  • The AIA Communities by Design Sustainable Assistance Team (SDAT) are accepting applications for projects to be considered. OVR should have several locations that would benefit from this effort while raising visibility for that community and the AIA. Consider submitting a community.
  • ArchiPAC is still in need of our support. The Alumni School Challenge is helping to increase those funds. Currently University of Cincinnati is in 6th place and University of Notre Dame is in 9th place. Let’s improve those numbers, since we all benefit from the political action undertaken by the AIA.
  • The International Code Council (ICC) is considering a requirement for a third exit stair in high-rise buildings among other things.

AIA 150:

  • Google Earth information system is live – CHECK IT OUT – it is incredible! Go to www.googleearth.com and turn on the AIA Layer. Also be aware that you can have your projects published on Google Earth, so send them in.
  • Blueprint for America events and projects continue. Please notify others in the region of those events to encourage sharing of information and support.

AIA Convention:

  • Start booking housing now for next year in Boston, some hotels sold out already
  • July 1, 2007 is the deadline for submissions for sessions in Boston ’08.

Operations:

  • Soloso (AIA eknowledge previously) will be available in June / July this year.
  • AIA Honors and Awards are going electronic this year. (Sustainability !)

Top issues of the NAC:

  • ARE concurrency. Gearing up for NCARB’s June meeting and advocating to states for ARE concurrency. Known issues are reciprocity among states that already offer ARE concurrency, i.e. Kentucky.
  • NCARB’s plan to more strictly regulate IDP units to a 6 month submittal process. As of now this model law will not be voted on in June at NCARB’s Meeting
  • Loan Deferment
    • The NAC is currently working with Paul Medhelson and AIA’s Political Action Committee on the possibility for Architectural Intern’s to defer their student loans while in their Internship.
  • AssociateNews and Forward, NAC’s national publications, are focusing in on the common architect with their "Joe Architect" series. AssociateNews is structured in a Q&A format that asks basic questions from how intern friendly the firm is to what the firm is doing about global warming and the 2030 carbon neutrality goal. Forward is focusing on more in-depth editorial articles about the firm’s position on the future of the profession, technology, internship, etc.
  • The NAC will be adding to the website www.archcareers.org a tips and link page for emerging professionals regarding career development.
  • A Career Center is being added to AssociateNews which brings links to career development websites.
  • The NAC sponsored three programs at Convention, Didactic Field Drawing, Speed Mentoring, and Alternative Careers in Sustainable Design. All three were very successful and well attended. Didactic Drawing will be submitted for next year’s convention in Boston.

Regional Associate Report

  • Jack Baumann, from Braun & Steidl Architects of Akron, OH, was voted in as the 08-10 Regional Associate Director.
  • Jack and I are planning a regional associate summit in late summer early fall.
  • KY/IN AIA Convention
    • Chris Bowling, Assoc. AIA and Amy Lett, Assoc. AIA, Kentucky State AIA IDP Coordinator are working on a 1 hour program to be held on Saturday of the convention. The topic will focus on the generational gaps between employer and employees, what is internship now, and how to integrate mentorship into your firm.
