and the resource for its members in service
to society.”
AIA Strategic Plan: has been
updated, see AIA web site to view & review.
Action Items from all State and Local Components:
1. Marvin Malecha, FAIA, First Vice President would like feedback
from all components on the AIA’s Strategic Plan and how
it is being received and working. Contact him at marvin_malecha@ncsu.edu
OVR:
- Carole Olshavsky, FAIA was installed as Chancellor of
the College of Fellows – Congratulations to Carole ! (
OVR still making a national impact !! )
Membership:
- AIA Code of Ethics are being updated as follows:
o Sustainability will be included in Cannon #6
o Pro Bono Services will be added to Cannon #2
- Component Partnership Committee continues to champion
ONE AIA
- Grassroots 2008 theme will be “COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP”.
- Continuing Education – considering adding sustainable
design requirements of 4 LU’s for a phase in from 2009-2012
as part of the 18 LU annual requirements.
- There are 112,650 licensed architects in the USA in 2007.
Membership targets are 70% of the licensed architects are to
be AIA members by 2016 (there are currently 37 architects per 100,000
people in USA )
- Membership categories – associates mean on a career
path in architecture to registration and a new category for non-license
track members is being considered.
AIA 150:
- The AIA 150 Book is planned to be available March
2008.
- 156 Blueprint Initiatives funded, 140 completed to date.
Institute:
- Issues to address in 2008:
o Collaboration with other groups
o Attract young architects
o Making real changes in communities – livable & sustainable.
- Greening of the Institute and the 21st Century Workplace
projects are projected at $38.4m, with completion targeted in 2012
(make headquarters a living example of our goals – Walk
the Walk)
- Supplemental Dues to be eliminated in 2009, will be voted
on at the National Convention in Boston this year (2007 income
from supplemental dues was $1.37m).
- Rules of the Board amended to reflect that the Board will
not take positions on resolutions to come before the membership
at conventions.
- AIA Position Statements will be updated for Eminent Domain
and Project Delivery.
- The 2 final candidates for The Architect of the Capitol
are both architects.
- There will be an SDAT of the US Capitol in DC during 2008
to help Congress understand our position on sustainability better.
- AIA sent Thank Yous to members of Congress for passing
the Energy Bill while we were attending the December Board meeting
in DC.
- NCARB announced that the ARE 3.1 will be available for
another 18 months and ARE 4.0 will be 7 divisions ( shorter and
more focused ).
- ASLA has a new initiative called “No Child Left
Inside” – to enhance environmental education and
return children to playing more outdoors.
Top issues of the NAC:
- The AIA/NAC Jason Pettigrew ARE Scholarship deadline
has been extended until Wednesday, February 27, 2008.
o Scholarship recipients will receive:
- Kaplan ARE Study Guides
- Reimbursement for the cost of passing all divisions of
the ARE one time.
- The NAC is getting ready for Grassroots – February
20th – 23rd.
- Membership and Associate benefits were discussed with
regard to traditional vs. non-traditional members and what can
be done differently/better for our members.
- The NAC position on the Associate Membership Category
was approved on November 15, 2007.
- The NAC feels there is a need to divide the “Associate” category
of membership into graduates from accredited architectural programs
or individuals meeting their states requirements to sit for the
ARE and all others who fall under the current Associate category.
o Reasons for Change:
- The current “Associate” category is a rapidly
growing group including an increasing number of non-licensure
track individuals.
- Those who have recently graduated and are pursuing their
license have very specific needs in relation to that effort.
- With an increasingly broader base of members in the “Associate” category,
the NAC is challenged to represent all of their needs.
- The IDP Outstanding Firm Award is still taking applications
but the January deadline has passed. It is our goal to have firms
from our region submit to this award, so if you work at a firm
or know of a firm, go to http://www.aia.org/idp_outstandingfirm_default
for more information to meet the July 15, 2008 deadline!
