AIA Ohio Valley Regional News

July & August 2007

From: Directors: Anthony Costello, FAIA & John W. Rogers, AIA, ACHA & Chris Bowling, Associate AIA Director

AIA Mission Statement:
“The AIA is the voice of the Architectural Profession and the resource for its members in service to society.”

  • Action Item (from Anthony Costello, FAIA):
Ohio Valley AIAS Charrette in Columbus, Indiana as part of the AIAKY and AIAIN joint convention and AIA 150 - BFA Symposium. In discussion with our AIAS chapter, we decided to invite the four Ohio schools as well as UK and UND as we have in the past. I am requesting that the state and local chapters in Ohio financially underwrite the cost of a school's AIAS chapter sending five (5) students to the charrette that will take place October 11-13. The teams will be made up of students from different school ..so it is very "non-competitive." Five teams of 7 students each. Expenses are for two nights in hotel, a modest amount for food and travel expenses. Hopefully, the respective schools can cover this last item. The Costello Family Fund to Support AIAS at Ball State is donating $1,000 to bring Bruce Race, FAIA, out from CA to facilitate the charrette! This alone is worth the "price of admission!

OVR:

  • The Third Solar Decathlon will be held on the National Mall in Washington this October. UC Architecture has a team with an entry. Lets get other architecture schools in the OVR involved in future decathlons. This will make a great convention session or chapter event to promote it and give emerging professionals a venue to show what they have done and know we are interested and appreciate what they have done. Bring the students, schools, the AIA and professionals together.
  • Herschman Architects of Cleveland, OH is pursuing the 2008 AIA Firm Award, we need to support them in every way. Stay tuned, we may need your help!

Advocacy:

  • AIA testified on capital hill that sustainability is good for small businesses and architects are best to help promote green design.
  • AIA is reminding Federal Agencies that QBS is the best selection method.
  • Terrorism Risk Insurance Act may be extended 10 years until it becomes mainstream in policies offered by insurance companies.
  • AIA is meeting with other groups to consider integrating Green Guidelines into building codes.
  • NCARB adopted a resolution to allow graduates to start the ARE prior to finishing IDP provided they have started a Council record.
  • ArchiPAC is distributing funds to election campaigns of those candidates aligned with AIA issues.
  • The AIA has pledged to develop tools to assist local governments in pursuing local goals of energy efficient public buildings and meet the AIA 2030 Challenge.

AIA 150:

  • Fund raising continues with $9.8m raised toward the $15m goal. This will continue through September and on to the end of the year as needed. Projects are being completed and promoted across the country. Keep informing the OVR of your local projects and events.

Operations:

  • Beginning July 17, 2007, the Wall Street Journal will feature the AIA Architecture Billings Index (ABI) as a stand-alone box on the Property Report page, which is published once a month within the Marketplace Section of the Journal. The ABI feature includes a short explanation of the current Index number and a graphic with the Index results for the past few years along with the latest result.
