Intro
The IDP process is a challenging yet very rewarding process.
To put the IDP process in the foreground of your daily activities
during your internship is not an easy task as the daily grind
and urgent matters fill your plate. As the state coordinator
it is my role to be a resource to you, keeping interns and
firms up-to-date on the changes made to the IDP process. My
focus will be to not only answer your questions as they arise
but to establish a network of people that are informed about
the IDP process around the state that can also serve as valuable
resources. Many firms in Indiana have excellent internship
development programs. Auxiliary coordinators within those firms
should be identified to help create an IDP resource network
across the state. We also need to celebrate the best practices
happening in our state by having firms submit for the IDP Firm
Award. This newsletter will talk about the new format of the
IDP Firm Award as well as other updates affecting the IDP process.
If you have questions or comments about the IDP process or
the items discussed in this newsletter please contact me at
jwelu@bsalifestructures.com.

Defining the network of IDP knowledge in Indiana
A call for Auxiliary Coordinators!
What is the first step in establishing a statewide network
of IDP resources?
As an intern where do you go when you have a question about
your internship experience? As a mentor or a supervisor how
do you keep up with continued changes in the IDP process to
help answer your intern’s questions? By identifying an
in-house IDP coordinator firms can help provide the answers
to interns through one source. The role of the IDP Auxiliary
Coordinator has been created to help spread necessary IDP information
to interns at a local level. By becoming an Auxiliary Coordinator
you will have access to tools and resources provided by the
IDP State Coordinator, Educator Coordinator and the AIA National
Component.
Click here for a description of the Auxiliary Coordinator.
If you currently serve as an IDP Coordinator in your firm
or are interested in serving as an Auxiliary Coordinator please
contact me.

New format for IDP Outstanding Firm Award
Summer jury cutoff: July 15, 2008!
A significant challenge firms are faced with is finding and
retaining top talent. A tremendous amount of time and resources
can be expended on seeking these people. The IDP Firm Award
has identified firms that have made the Intern Development
Program a part of their culture since 1991. Being an IDP Firm
is an excellent way to communicate to interns the firm’s
commitment to their professional development. This year a new
format for the IDP Firm Award now identifies 12 essential criteria
for firms to offer interns. Firms that are identified as an
IDP Firm they will maintain that status for three years. Firms
that not only meet the 12 essential criteria but also exceed
in at least three of the categories are eligible to be honored
as an IDP Outstanding Firm.
Click on the link below to find out more information about
the new format as well as how your firm can submit for the
award.

Emerging Professionals Companion – Version
2 on the way
The Emerging Professionals Companion (EPC) is an excellent
online resource. If you are not aware of this resource I highly
encourage you to follow the link below to find out more about
the EPC. For those of you that have used this tool in the past
you will notice that the site has gone through some modifications.
The most noticeable is that it no longer requires a sign-in.
This has made it easier to jump into the learning exercises
as well as making it more accessible to everyone. The release
of version two should be coming some time in January of 2009.
This version will include new information and exercises. There
is also talk that NCARB is moving towards allowing supplementary
education credits that are earned in this website to count
towards your “required units” in each category
up to 5 units. I will keep you posted to alert you if and when
this takes affect.
In the mean time continue to use this valuable resource. If
you have questions about how you get credit towards your IDP
units feel free to contact me.

Transition from ARE 3.1 to ARE 4.0
Anyone that is in the process of taking or getting ready to
take the ARE exams should be aware of the changes being made
to the exam. As of May this year the ARE 4.0 will take the
place of the ARE 3.1 exam. If you have already passed an exam
prior to May 15th you are considered a transition candidate
and can continue to take the ARE 3.1 until June 30, 2009. If
there is a chance you will not complete the exams by then pay
close attention to the transition charts available on the NCARB
website.
What is different about the new exam?
The ARE 4.0 is a more integrated exam that will combine the
graphic divisions of the exam with the multiple-choice divisions.
Where the ARE 3.1 had 9 divisions the new ARE 4.0 will have
7 divisions. Click
here for an in-depth explanation of why the exam is going through
this transition.
