The annual 2010 AIA Indiana Service Awards were presented at the 2010 AIA Indiana/AIA Kentucky Convention on October 15, 2010, which was held at Belterra Casino Resort & Spa.

2010 AIA Indiana Citation Service Award Winner
Dan Overbey, Assoc. AIA, Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf

Dan has contributed his time and talents always with a positive tone. His graphic design abilities and knowledge regarding sustainable issues have been invaluable. His efforts have made AIA Indiana a better organization. This past year Dan testified on behalf of AIA Indiana before the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Code Services Section Code Commission regarding the proposed Energy Code, lobbied at the Statehouse, and served on the AIA Indiana Sustainable Design Legislative Subcommittee.
2010 AIA Indiana Citation Service Award Winner
Mark Darrall, AIA, A2SO4

Mark serves on the AIA Indiana Sustainable Design Legislative Subcommittee and has willingly given his time and talent on behalf of AIA Indiana. This past year Mark testified on behalf of AIA Indiana before the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Code Services Section Code Commission regarding the proposed Energy Code, lobbied at the Statehouse, and has been monitoring closely the actions of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Code Services actions regarding the proposed updated plumbing code. Mark's actions have truly made a positive mark for AIA Indiana and the architecture profession.

2010 Edward D. Pierre Award Winner
Deb Kunce, AIA

Presented annually by the Board of Directors of AIA Indiana, it is named in honor of Edward D. Pierre, FAIA (1890-1977). He was a crusader for the welfare of children, decent housing for all, peace and progressive urban planning. Mr. Pierre was recognized repeatedly for his outstanding service to the architectural profession and the public. To honor his service, this award is presented for advocacy for architecture as a civic and community leader as well as service to the profession and to the public.
This year's recipient, Deb Kunce, AIA, is a member of the AIA National Board, serves on the Institute's Governance Task Force, Strategic Directions Committee, and Integrated Media Task Force. She is a past president of AIA Indiana and AIA Indianapolis. Deb has served as volunteer with Indianapolis Public Schools, St. Pius X Church, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and the Indiana Arts Commission.
The design awards jury concluded that, "Deb Kunce is an energetic and visible advocate balancing her service to both the AIA and the larger community."
2010 Juliet Peddle Award Winner
Wayne Schmidt, FAIA

Recognizing an individual architect for their strong willingness to pioneer, being successful in breaking new ground, strong devotion and commitment to architecture, display of professionalism and perseverance, and having a kind spirit, this award is named after the first female registered architect in Indiana. A Terre Haute native, Juliet Peddle (1889 – 1979) was the second woman to graduate from then University of Michigan School of Architecture. She co-founded the Chicago Architectural Women's Forum, operated her own office for over 30 years, and worked diligently to enlighten her community on the value of historic structures.
This year's recipient, Wayne Schmidt, FAIA, founder and CEO of Schmidt Associates, Wayne was the 1982 recipient of the Edward D. Pierre Award and just this year was named an Indiana Legend in the field of architecture by the Indiana Design Coalition. He currently serves on boards including the Economic Club of Indiana, the Indianapolis Regional Center, the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, the International School of Indiana, the Indianapolis City Market, St. Francis Hospital, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, and the Indianapolis Parks Foundation.
The design awards jury concluded that, "Wayne Schmidt is a mentor and leader whose personal and professional contributions have shaped the design profession in Central Indiana and beyond."
2010 Young Architect Award Winner
Sarah Hempstead, AIA, Schmidt Associates

This award was created by the Board of Directors of AIA Indiana to recognize proficiency and exceptional accomplishments in, and contributions to, the profession by a licensed, AIA Indiana architect, 40 years or less in age.
The first Young Architect Award winner is Sarah Hempstead, AIA. At age 35, Sarah has already held the position of President with AIA Indianapolis and currently serves as secretary with AIA Indiana. She also belongs to the Society for College and University Planning, the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers, and the National Organization of Minority Architects. She has achieved LEED Accreditation and was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal from Ball State University in 1998. She currently leads both the Higher Education Studio and the Urban Environments Studio at her workplace. Sarah is a graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy leadership training program and serves on the National Philanthropy Committee for Ball State University.
The jury noted, "Sarah Hempstead is active in the community, the profession and practice. She has advanced quickly in the profession by supporting and promoting progress in others."
2010 Blackburn Award Winner
Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives (CIAA)

Walter S. Blackburn was an African-American architect elected to the College of Fellows in the 1980s. He chaired the AIA's Diversity Taskforce in 1992, and shortly thereafter, was elected as its Vice President. His career also included many terms of service in the Indiana Arts Commission and on the boards of numerous local arts organizations and nonprofit institutions.
Successor to the Don E. Gibson Award, this honor is bestowed upon a non-architect public member or organization that has contributed of their time and person in service to or support of the architectural profession in Indiana, or an architect who has exemplified professional and public service as Blackburn did. A scholarship for the advanced studies in architecture or related profession is also bestowed with this award through the Indiana Architectural Foundation.
This year's winner of the Walter S. Blackburn Award is the Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives (CIAA). Not since 1990 has an organization been so honored with this award.
The CIAA's major mission is dedicated to the collection, conservation and making available for future generations, the drawings, models and other documents pertaining to Columbus' unequalled collection of post-WWII architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and civic art projects.
For the last five years, it has broadened its mission to include the active promotion of both public and professional awareness of the value that good design has played in elevating this Hoosier community to a position of the "gold standard" by which the quality of life of communities is measured.
The jury noted that, "Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives promotes design excellence and educates us about Columbus, Indiana's rich modern architectural traditions – a civic portfolio of modern architecture of international consequence."
2010 Distinguished Firm Award Winner
Schmidt Associates

The AIA Indiana Distinguished Firm Award was created one year ago to recognize a Member Firm which, through consistent leadership, vision and ability, has distinguished itself through design and implementation of works of architecture that enhance the quality of our environment.
The 2010 AIA Indiana Distinguished Firm Awards winner, Schmidt Associates of Indianapolis, Indiana, has annually been named a "Best Place to Work" by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce beginning with 2007. In 2008, it was named the only Indiana firm among the nine Best AEC Firms to Work For by the national trade publication Building Design + Construction. Employees have participated in such events as Random Acts of Greenness Day and Mass Ave Bloom. They have served lunch at Wheeler Mission and worked with Habitat for Humanity. Many serve as board members for local professional and community organizations. Schmidt Associates strives to comply with one guiding principal – Servant Leadership.
The jury concluded that, "In its 5th decade, Schmidt Associates' has a reputation as a great place to work, and the firm's work and civic contributions are recognized as outstanding by both the profession and the community."
