Jury Comments:
"Best example of this project type that I have seen. Design and Owner team are to be commended for pushing this project beyond standard expectations. "
"A very authentic contemporary homelike living environment for those in need. Architecture is inventive in composition, materiality and detail—inside and out. Plan organization and clarity is superbly executed. The site plan appears too big until the photos reveal a space that feels just right--existing tree in the courtyard and other entourage needs to be shown on site plan. Having worked on similar buildings I really appreciate the designers restraint in letting organization, light, space, material, detail and color create a much needed welcoming presence. The furnishings look very comfortable—maybe not the architects first choice—but appear like a nice place to relax with friends while also maintaining personal space by being individual seating units."
"A very well-conceived project. The planning that encloses the courtyard is a good move. The photo of the sleeping room indicates that the designer understands the role that architecture should play in recovery and well-being."
"Through a clear plan concept and direct use of materials, this building provides a welcoming, safe, yet open place for healing and growth."
"A very clear plan and site strategy were employed to create a facility for troubled children and teens. The interior spaces were child-friendly without being pandering. The exterior court was a clearly defined "yard" which organized the plan and served as a natural orientation device. A small set of simple materials were beautifully detailed and clearly expressed."

Jury Comments:
"Wonderful interiors project and a number of great examples of integration of products and processes in a workplace environment."
"Ceiling treatments and the long wall feel most successful—especially the large expanse of open office—quite beautiful and looks like a good place to work. Red orange conference looks like a cover shot."
"This project does a good job of showcasing the capabilities of the company. The use of color is refreshing; however, the undulating ceiling plane in an otherwise ordinary open office is the highlight."
"Well-presented but several slides were unnecessary or poorly cropped. Thoughtful use of color and interior lighting integrated with the one cohesive material – plastic."
"This project was comprised of a series of wonderfully inventive interior spaces all linked to the clients product - plastics. While the jury was concerned about the unsustainable nature of the clients products, the architect's response was cleverly appropriate and clearly communicated."

Jury Comments:
"Most consistent project of the entire. Quality in design, construction and presentation."
"I would feel really bad if this were not a beautiful building. the site is too good to waste and the architects sensitivity to the natural and built environment was very evident in the context images provided in the presentation. Nice and important touch. A very simple organization, composition and form. Materiality and detail are not quite as clear and elegant and in particular the stone as used seemed in conflict with the clarity of everything else in the design. This project is really well documented and should be an example for others."
"An excellent presentation that captures the place. The simplicity of the project's form exhibits a quietness that seems appropriate for the site."
"A beautiful site and the importance of this was well presented in the award submission. Simple classic form but maybe too traditional in the application of materials, particularly on the exterior."
"This submission was, perhaps, the best at "story telling". The submission revealed the context – a beautiful, natural setting – and used it to reinforce the architect's response. The result is a simple, elegantly constructed building with a series of docks extending it into the landscape."

Jury Comments:
"Well done restoration project. Effort put forth to match existing finishes, colors, and materials is appreciated."
"Very thoughtful adaptive reuse of delightful mansion. Well thought out and executed. New systems integration was appreciated by jury—before realizing that one of the images noted the integration of mechanical systems."
"The presentation does a good job of telling the story. The interiors are beautifully restored – a difficult challenge. The interiors seem to capture the spirit of the original space."
"Impressive reuse and restoration, integration of modern technology seamlessly into a historic structure. The formal rework of the site plan seemed a bit foreign to the mansion, and the exterior lighting and photography did not help the design review."
"This impressive restoration of a eclectic historic mansion seamlessly integrates contemporary mechanical and life safety systems to extend the life of this remarkable home. The architects modifications to the site plan were also well considered and result in a 19th century home ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century."

Jury Comments:
"So often this project type results in the same building being delivered regardless of the location or region. This project rejects that standard developer model and raises the bar a little. Building seems to be contextual. Interiors are nice and do not reflect the norm for healthcare projects today."
"We conceived and executed plan and section—not unique nor innovative but very well done. I still don't understand the red structure nor believe that it makes this a better experience. There seemed to be a lot of attention to making the building and spaces comfortable for people who are probably users because they don't feel well. I think an important lesson for designers of health care buildings. I really liked the composition and feeling from the street. This is not a pat solution building nor does is it confused for being an uninspired health care facility lost in a hospital precinct. It knows where it is and says so by connecting with the street and its surroundings."
"A well-presented project. The plan and elevations exhibit a controlled designer that understands the fundamentals of design – composition, hierarchy, order. The masonry detailing adds another layer to the elevations, which is nice."
"A thoughtful use of simple materials and integration of light in the interior gathering spaces. Good presentation of the site context and plan diagrams."
"A series of lively interior spaces helped to elevate this project above many of the healthcare entries to be a true community building. Again, a limited set of materials was clearly expressed and carefully considered. The massing was clear and direct as well."

Jury Comments:
"Simple and straightforward use of Sustainable 'Kit of Parts'. Very organized plan and site plan. Submittal well done."
"A simple elegant building and site organization. A very modest series of well integrated design ideas and interventions in both the building and landscape. Sustainability and building performance features are ever present elements of the whole building without yelling about what they do. Interiors were not represented as favorably as other parts of the building—design and photography."
"Overall, a nicely presented project, both in drawings and photos. The planning is well organized and the development of the exterior exhibits a control of materials and composition."
"The only submission to be clear in its intent for sustainable strategies. A clean well organized plan, cognizant of daylight and seamless integration of energy-efficient measures."
"A simple massing strategy was employed to create an innovative and sustainable teaching facility. Both the context and the building response were well communicated in the submission."

Jury Comments:
"Not only should we reward the writer we need to make sure to reward the paper for supporting this effort."
I hope that this is an example that is repeated by other architects across the country. At a time when architecture editors/critics are leaving daily publications we need to continue public dialogue about architecture, urban design, planning and related topics. This architects efforts are commendable. I would like to see this forwarded to AIA---the Institute should be aware."
"I appreciate the boldness of this submission. Although it is unexpected in this, a "design awards" program, it presents a passion for and advocacy for design excellence communicated to a broader audience than our own profession. That effort deserves recognition."
"Our collective design work can only be furthered through an educated public. I commend the submission in seeking recognition for a significant way architects are bettering our built environment. It's not only through our physical impressions on our towns and cities, but the thought leadership and education we can provide to our community."
"The jury chose to recognize the efforts of a single individual to elevate public awareness of the value of design. This is arguably the most important role for the AIA and this member revealed that he has consistently worked with the local newspaper to discuss design and design related issues. The body of work, produced over five years, was quite impressive and seemed worthy of special recognition. Thank you."
