Bruce Race, FAIA - Ball State CAP Professor Receives High Honor

CAP Professor receives Indiana planning group's highest honor

Bruce Race, BARCH '80, an associate professor of practice with Ball State University's College of Architecture and Planning, has won the highest award bestowed by the Indiana Chapter of the American Planning Association.

Race received the Indiana Planning Sagamore on Friday, May 11 during the chapter's spring conference at the Ball State Alumni Center.

The Planning Sagamore is intended to recognize individual accomplishment and to single out the recipient "as a model planner before the public and the planning profession," according to the award criteria.

"Bruce is being honored because of his accomplishments over many years of service as an Urban Planning professional," said Joshua Desmond, awards committee chair for the Indiana Chapter.

Race, who lives and practices in Indianapolis, is the founder and principal of RACESTUDIO. He practiced for many years in Berkeley, Calif., before returning to Indianapolis in 2009. His projects over the years have received 30 planning awards, including national recognition from the American Planning Association, Environmental Protection Agency, American Institute of Architects, and the Society of College and University Planning.

In February, Race was inducted into the Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

He teaches in Ball State's Masters of Urban Design program in Indianapolis, and is a PhD candidate at the University of Cardiff in Wales. He is researching the impact of climate change mitigation and adaptation on the future shape of cities.
