Jury Comments:

A simple concept – a dramatic tower rising above the city-scaled plinth; the curve of the tower was just enough to create a bold presence on the skyline while the articulation of the curtainwall seemed to moderate the scale of the structure; the combination of the opaque "podium" mass and the glass tower create a building that simultaneously belongs to the earth and the sky; an articulated façade employs subtle, repetitive fins that change with the passing sun; this is a large and complicated program which is well executed both in plan and in massing.

Jury Comments:

A clearly articulated floor plan with circle, wedge, and bar building relating to both street and forest; the curved stone wall is a simple and respectful strategy of addressing the ever present residential garage – usually an eyesore; the simple and functional plan layout places services and circulation in an articulated "wedge"; ample daylight and attractive massing make for a good composition inside and out; plan organization is simple and strong; all rooms take advantage of the views to the trees, creek, and allow northern light for the artwork; we liked the exposed raw concrete up against the polished surfaces.

Jury Comments:

A convincing conversion of the existing post office into contemporary academic uses incorporating many of the building's original details; this is a stately government building tactfully repurposed for higher education; the architects' interventions in this grand context is clean and understated; a successful marriage of history and modern technology integrating all of the new systems and technology within a historic fabric is not an easy task; the architect met this challenge and created a dramatic environment for learning.

Jury Comments:

A clear resolution of the competing requirements for security and openness; the architects' unyielding attention to detail and uncompromising minimalism provide a much improved lobby, both functionally and aesthetically; the design team successfully navigated an unwieldy and often obtuse client for a space that is anything but; the team's submission entry successfully presented the simple, often subtle differences of "before" and "after" ...a critical task for a jury evaluating this design entry; the simple move of continuing the travertine wall material to the floor was significant, the integration of security required in our federal buildings today is not easy; this was done with modest intervention and sensitivity.

Jury Comments:

This project represents a new awareness of preservation as well as the beginnings of a larger movement to save and repurpose our architectural heritage in this country. This renovation/restoration has demonstrated the impact of the goal to save our heritage and build on it, as evidenced by the continued use of the structure and the influence it has had on the development of the neighborhood around it. It is for this reason that the recipient is completely deserving of the 25 year award.

Jury Comments:

Sensitive to the campus scale and context; a very compelling building section bringing natural light deep within the facility; the plan reinforced the campus walk patterns; an exciting and formally innovative addition to the campus quadrangle; among the architects' many successes are appropriate massing and adept use of materials; ample day lighting paired with generous circulation/gathering spaces create social spaces for the exchange of ideas across two historically separate campus cultures – business and engineering.

Jury Comments:

An accurate and extremely sensitive restoration, beautifully executed and carefully detailed; on the exterior – the architects uncovered and restored the simple splendor of this 1924 landmark; on the interior – a symphony of color and detail was meticulously restored and is highlighted by masterful lighting.
